Just because you have a child does not mean that you have to sacrifice your life. A backpack baby carrier is a good way to stay active once you are a parent. It is fairly depressing to feel that you are being excluded and without a good baby carrier you can quickly feel this. Below I have details three tips to getting a baby carrier which is good for you and the baby.
1. Your Babies Comfort- A crying baby will make for a miserable trip, so you need to be sure that your baby is comfortable and stays comfortable if they fall asleep. You do not want the baby to sleep awkwardly or to have straps poking into them.
Tip - The backpack needs to have good padding everywhere there is contact between the baby and the carrier. There should also be suitable cushioning for the babies head for when they fall asleep.
If you child/ toddler is a little older or longer it is worth looking into foot straps.
These straps stop the child's legs from swinging and they offer support for the child's lower back and pelvis.2. Comfort for the Adult - Just as important as the babies comfort is the comfort of the person carrying. If the adult is uncomfortable then it is fairly certain that your trip will not be repeated.
Tip - The shoulder straps should be wide and well padded, as should the hip support. All straps should be adjustable while the carrier is on. Finally the length of the carrier should be adjustable. If the length of the carrier is incorrect the weight of the carrier will not be correctly distributed between the hips and shoulders.
3. Accessories - To ensure that your child has a safe and fun time it is important to have the correct accessories. The most important accessories are those pertaining to the weather.
Tip - Wind and sun can leave a child's skin burnt very quickly, and rain will cause discomfort and can lead to other illnesses. Your carrier should have good wind, rain and sun covers. These should attach easily and securely. In the best carriers the covers will be located in a designated compartment which is easy to access.
Your carrier should have well designed compartments and space for baby essentials such as snacks, spare clothes and nappy change equipment.
I became very attached to the mirror which comes with the Bushbaby carrier. This is attached by a tie to a pocket on the waist support and allows you to check on your baby.
Sounds totally unnecessary, but it is great to be able to see you baby either sleeping soundly or see them giggling as you enjoy the countryside. Finally, you will be amazed how much you can share with your child from an early age. Parenting is not just about sacrifices.
